PORTSMOUTH, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 24, 2000--Pan American Airways today announced that it would begin its Pittsburgh to Sanford/Orlando service on Monday March 27, 2000. The new start date is a few weeks ahead of what was previously announced.
The increased service is in response to a request by the Pittsburgh International Airport as well as numerous passenger requests related to US Airways potential suspension of service because of an employee job action and labor dispute.
The Pan Am flight will be priced at $138 each way. Flight reservations and fare information are available at www.FlyPanAm.com and by telephone at 1-800-FlyPanAm.
All scheduled service will use Pan Am's Boeing 727-200 reconfigured Clipper Class aircraft.
The Pan Am action follows a formal announcement by US Airways on March 21st that it would suspend service on all flights beginning Saturday, March 25th if an employee job action is called for.
Dan Fortnam, Pan Am's Vice President of Marketing, said, ``This city pair was already planned to begin on May 1, 2000. Because of the huge volume of passenger requests, we decided to begin it a few weeks early.'' Fortnam added, ``We have been watching the USAirways situation quite closely, and for the past several days the level of inquiries and customer requests have grown quite rapidly. We looked at our resources and determined that we could respond to this situation by starting our service ahead of our previous timetable.''

About Pan Am
The original Pan Am, founded in the late 1920's by Juan Trippe, set the standard for modern air travel worldwide as the operator of the famous Pan Am Clippers and, later, as the first to fly the Boeing 747. Along the way, Pan Am's blue globe became one of the most recognized logos in the world.
The owners of New Hampshire-based Guilford Transportation Industries acquired the new Pan Am in June of 1998. The new owners relocated the company's headquarters from Ft. Lauderdale to Portsmouth in December of 1998. At Portsmouth, the company operates a 220,000 square foot maintenance facility, as well as other aviation related businesses.
Pan Am currently provides scheduled passenger service to New England through Portsmouth, NH, Gary/Chicago, IN, and Sanford/Orlando, FL, and has recently added scheduled service in Bangor, ME and Pittsburgh, PA.
